Geek Treats: Holy Chili Bake, Batman!

Welcome back to another edition of Geek Treats here on Nerdeux, where we show you how to prepare deliciously dorky treats from all over the web! This week we’ll be adding a twist to a quick and easy appetizer treat. So grab your oven mitt and hit the jump for the delicious details.

Ahhh the chili dip, delicious staple in the appetizer kingdom. Today we’re going to add a little something extra to make it a bit more awesome and fun. Whether you’re having a Batman theme-party or just looking for something new for the upcoming Halloween festivities, this is sure to delight.

For starters, get that oven pre-heating at 375 and gather your tools:

  • 38oz of your preferred type of chili
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (60z)
  • 1 can of crescent dinner rolls
  • 1 tablespoon of cornmeal
  • bat shaped cookie cutter
  • Ungreased baking pan

The first thing you’ll want to do is unroll the dough on a flat surface. Hint: I lightly spray some cooking oil on a cutting board for this as the dough tends to get stuck on there otherwise. Pinch and press the perforations to seal it into a solid sheet.

Next, use your cookie cutter to make the bats. Be sure not to get too close to the outer edges as it will likely tear. Press firmly otherwise it’s going to pull and wreck your work thus far.

Empty the chili into your baking dish and sprinkle with the shredded cheese. Then place your cutout sheet of bats over the top. Hint: another good reason for the cooking spray mentioned above is that you can just flip the cutting board upside down for this step instead of trying to peel it off without wrecking it! Once you got it situated, sprinkle cornmeal over the dough areas.

Now you’re ready to pop it in the oven! Let it bake for about 18-20 minutes or until it’s a nice golden brown. Voila! One tasty and fun treat for your guests. Enjoy and be sure to check back next week for more play-with-your-food fun!
