Demonoid Busted, Shut Down by Ukraine Authorities
The day many pirates have feared has arrived. After weeks of dealing with what was assumed to be a DDoS attack, officials out of the Ukraine confirmed that Demonoid has been shut down. Read more after the jump.
ColoCall, the datacenter hosting the former website’s data, tells it like this:
Investigators have copied all the information from the servers Demonoid and sealed them […] Some equipment was not seized, but now it does not work, and we were forced to terminate the agreement with the site. […] Shortly after [the DDoS] a hacker break-in occurred, and a few days later came the investigators
The entire takedown appears to be a gift from the Ukranian government to the US, as it was timed with the arrival of their Prime Minister to meet with the Unites States government to talk about many things, one being copyright infringement.
So far, the data from the servers have been taken into custody, but not the admins themselves, whom ColoCall has not yet revealed. If the history of persistence from pirates is any indication, this won’t be the last we’ll see of Demoniod.
