Borderlands 2 is out. Here’s how to fix it.

If your like me, you are currently wielding a bucket of coffee in order to due to the the all-nighters you’ve been spending on Borderlands 2. If you’re playing it on PC, you may have also noticed some issues with textures. No, your vision isn’t blurring from being overloaded with awesomeness, you just need to apply a very simple fix.

Gearbox forumite RenaFuse has created a very nice tutorial on how to fix problems that you may be having with your textures. The first fix requires you to go into a config file (by default) located in Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\Config

Open “WillowEngine.ini” with Notepad and Search for “[TextureStreaming]” Then replace the code below with this:
[TextureStreaming]
PoolSize=512
MemoryMargin=20
MemoryLoss=0
HysteresisLimit=40
DropMipLevelsLimit=34
StopIncreasingLimit=20
StopStreamingLimit=16
MinEvictSize=14
MinFudgeFactor=1
FudgeFactorIncreaseRateOfChange=0.5
FudgeFactorDecreaseRateOfChange=-0.4
MinRequestedMipsToConsider=11
MinTimeToGuaranteeMinMipCount=2
MaxTimeToGuaranteeMinMipCount=12
UseTextureFileCache=TRUE
LoadMapTimeLimit=0.1
LightmapStreamingFactor=0.02
ShadowmapStreamingFactor=0.2
TextureFileCacheBulkDataAlignment=1
UsePriorityStreaming=True
bAllowSwitchingStreamingSystem=True
UseDynamicStreaming=True
bEnableAsyncDefrag=False
bEnableAsyncReallocation=False
MaxDefragRelocations=256
MaxDefragDownShift=128
BoostPlayerTextures=3.0
TemporalAAMemoryReserve=4.0
EnableStats=true
HistoryDepth=50
DynamicStreaming=2
DynamicStreamingDistances=1250
DynamicStreamingDistances=200
DynamicStreamingDistances=9

Turning PhysX to it’s lowest setting is what really helped me and my gaming laptop, but there’s a few lines in there that combined make the textures appear nice and quick-like.

Rena also provides custom settings for anyone with a high-end PC that is still struggling. It’s a lot of code so I would suggest heading over to the forum to read it, and if you dare, you can join in on the AMD vs. nVidia fanboyism that the comments turned into.

Other “fixes” are being posted, such as this one, which removes the outlines, which I personally love. You can see the differences here. I’ll be keeping this post updated in case more fixes are found, such as how to turn PhysX off completely.

    I am extremely impressed with your writing skills as well as with the layout on your weblog.
    Is this a paid theme or did you modify it yourself? Either way keep up
    the nice quality writing, it’s rare to see a great blog like this one nowadays.
